Run
I ran 4 minutes on mini trampoline and an exercise mat at the Physiotherapist’s rooms today. No pain whatsoever in my shin! I get to do a short run on grass tomorrow. Then every second day add some distance.
I feel as if I could run a lot more, but I’ll be conservative.
The shin pain settled down while I was out in the field at Yarrahapini. Today it didn’t hurt at all, I ran across the road to test it out and it was fine. I’m still icing and applying anti inflammatories.
I did 9.3km on the exercise bike in 30 minutes without my knee taped.
Minor stress fracture
I visited the podiatrist this morning. She showed me the X-rays. The report said there was no abnormality, and suggested an MRI.
There was in fact a long bright line on the tibia right where the most inflammed part of the leg is, like someone had scratched my bone. She said she would keep the X-rays and get someone else to look at them.
It might be a very minor stress fracture of my shin. No wonder it was so painful. Oh well, that will keep me out of running for a while longer than a simple case of shin splints.
My shin was only a little bit sore to walk on today. The pain is going away fairly quickly with ice and anti inflamms and stretches.
Putting a positive spin on this, I have run over a thousand kilometres this year, I never expected to do that in my wildest dreams. It took me three years to beat my maltracking patella, one to two months to recover from a stress fracture is nothng.
Running Haiku
Is this a dream?
Running, striding out freely
Please do not wake me.
Eye level mist, suspended
Grass clippings flick from quick heels
Floating over wet grass
There was a runnning haiku challenge on the masters running forum. Above were my contributions.
I managed half an hour on the exercise bike yesterday and this morning. My ankle is much less inflamed and swollen this morning.
Shin splints part II
I was scared, I was scared
Tired and underprepared
But I wait for you
In my place Coldplay
The pain and swelling is better tonight.
A quick note on shin splints. This is without doubt the nastiest most eye watering pain imaginable. I have suffered a lot of pain over the last few years, but this shin pain was so sudden and so intense, that I never, ever want to feel it again. Achilles tendon pain is lame in comparison, my knee at its worse was close, and that was when my whole foot felt like it was on fire.
I find out on Monday the results of my X-ray. The way the pain and swelling is responding I’m holding more hope that I don’t have a stress fracture.
In my place
Make an effort. I’ve got to fit in, at least a little. I have people around the salubrious Brighton mews talking about me. Time to do some positive things to take the heat off, like paying that fricking greedy SMS bill (done), maybe stick in a few new plants in my pots, get the pest contollers to go over the garage.
Negative rant deleted from here.
Reading through this blog I can’t help but think, yes I’ve been through quite a bit the last few years. Some might even call it hell.
I’ve also shown what I’m capable of if I put my mind to it. A reader of this blog even said it was inspiring! The positive path is clear enough, I’ve seen it, have to pursue it.
Sickie
The physio let me have today and tomorrow off work to rest up my swollen shin.
Oh joy! Now I can become expert in a new injury. I know about Patella femoral pain, achilles tendonitis and shin splints. On the scale of ouchness I rate shin pain very highly.
What have I done to myself?
Today was an ordinary day.
My leg is swollen and warm to the touch. It has become sorer and sorer as I walk around.
I saw a podiatrist and she ordered an X-ray. I am going to have new orthotics made up.
I’ve done some googling about shin pain. And it looks as if I could be confronting;
Tibial stress disorder
Tibial stress fracture (probably need a bone scan to rule that out)
Compartment syndrome.
I see a physiotherapist today.
The joy of shin pain
Ouch! This hurts. Another day limping, think it started to improve this evening after icing and anti inflamms all day.
Feeling more positive tonight.
Can’t see a physio until Wednesday, I have an appointment to have my orthotics looked at tomorrow. I noticed the glue on the uppers is coming lose and the orthotics start to slap when I run.
Mmmm….just before I went to bed, I looked at my ankle and it was swollen. A lot less pain though. Hope my leg doesn’t fall off while I am asleep.
